We focus on "lifestyle entrepreneurs;" individuals who take advantage of the area's recreational resources and business opportunities, combining their drive for recreational activities with an industry cluster that continues to expand.

GTA Meeting  - Jan. 27th
The Columbia River Gorge Technology Alliance invites you to the January meeting -Classroom Partnerships with Technology Industries
 
When: Tuesday, January 27, 2009. 6:30 p.m.
Where: CenterPointe Community Bank meeting room, 2500 Cascade Ave, Hood River, Oregon
 
Alan Cunningham, head of the Science and Technology Department with Arlington School District and the 2008 TechStart Technology Educator of the Year, will discuss how the technology industry can get involved in the classroom to educate our future technology leaders. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to meet and network with GTA members and guests.

GTA Seeking New Board Members
Interested in helping guide the Gorge Technology Alliance? There are several openings on the board that are currently being recruited for. Contact Chair Nancy White at NancyW@custominterface.net if you'd like to be considered or for more information.
Jessica Metta Joins MCEDD As Project Manager
Jessica Metta joined Mid-Columbia Economic Development District staff in December as a Project Manager. Living in Hood River since 2005, Jessica was most recently a Planner with the Columbia River Gorge Commission. During her tenure at the Gorge Commission, Jessica gained a thorough knowledge of the region and experience managing complex projects, including acting as coordinator for the gorge-wide visioning process known as the Columbia Gorge Future Forum.
 
Jessica is a strong supporter of regional collaboration and is looking forward to her work with MCEDD. She'll be assisting the Gorge Technology Alliance and the Wasco County Economic Development Commission as well as furthering other MCEDD initiatives. Hood River PubTalkT - March 10
The Hood River PubTalkT is an event of the Hood River County Office of Economic Development in cooperation with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network. Event Sponsors include the Hood River County Chamber of Commerce, The Small Business Development Center and the Mid-Columbia Economic Development District.

PubTalk events are presented by Hood River County in partnership with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network and local partners.
$80,000 in Worker Training Funds Available for Area Businesses
Your company may be eligible for Employer Workforce Training Funds through the Region 9 Workforce Response Team.  

Existing businesses, business consortia, associations, labor organizations or private non-profits operating in Hood River, Gilliam, Sherman, Wasco and Wheeler counties are eligible. No government organizations will be awarded funds.

National Geographic launches Geotourism for Central Cascades
MapGuide to Tell Region's Authentic Story -
National Geographic Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations has joined organizations in Washington and Oregon to publicize the world-class natural and cultural attractions of the Central Cascades. The pilot project seeks to contribute to the economic health of communities by promoting geotourism: tourism that sustains and enhances the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents.

Visit www.thecentralcascades.com to find out more about this project, current nominations, community forum schedule, and geotourism. Local community forums are planned for Stevenson on Feb 12, Hood River on March 13 and The Dalles (details TBA).  The nomination deadline is March 29, 2009.
SearchFest 2009 -Mar 10 in Portland
SEMpdx brings you SearchFest 2009, a full-day search engine marketing conference featuring multiple learning sessions and expert panels to help you leverage search engine marketing (SEM) in your organization. SearchFest is one of the Northwest's largest conferences dedicated to search engine marketing, helping attendees leverage SEM to increase market awareness and revenue for their respective businesses. Feb 24 GTA Meeting: Government Contracting
Kathleen May with NW Alliance Group and Brice Barrett of the Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition will keynote the February meeting of the Gorge Technology Alliance. NW Alliance Group specializes in getting government, mostly military, contracts and grants for Pacific Northwest companies. The Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition is a member-funded 501(c)(6) organization that improves the defense industry climate across the Pacific Northwest. Come hear about what's going to be happening in government contracting: many things are changing and there's a lot of potential for our region.

Gorge Angel Conference accepting applications
Applications are currently being accepted for companies interested in competing for funding at the  2009 Gorge Angel Conference. Hood River County Economic Development and the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network are urging angel-ready companies to apply. GAIN II LLC will invest an estimated $100,000 grand prize in the company they judge to be the best overall angel investment opportunity. Applications must be submitted by March 27, 2009. The Gorge Angel Conference will be May 19, 2009.
